Detailed Proposal Table for Main Magazine

Detailed Proposal Table

Describe your idea for the brief: My magazine is going to be a Rock magazine called Toxic Sound. It is going to be based on magazines like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. For my front cover I’m going to have a picture of Rou Reynolds from Enter Shikari which I’m going to take when I go to see then live and the main sell-line will be Enter Shikari and the sub heading will be A Flash Flood of Shikari which will be placed in the middle of the main image. The Mast Head is going to be at the top of the front cover and above that will be a couple of small sell lines.. Also I will have some pictures of posters that will be inside for the RIP poster special on the left hand side of the page.
On my contents page I will have the pages and what is on the pages and the title at the top of the page, also I will have images of bands placed around the text.
On the first page of the double page spread I will have the article title A Flash Flood Of Shikari, I will have the article in the centre of the page and will have some images of Enter Shikari around the article. On the second page I will have upcoming tours of different bands.

Genre/ sub genre: My magazines genre will be Rock music (Mainly Metal post-hardcore, metalcore, and punk rock). Some texts, which have inspired me to choose this genre, are Kerrang! and Metal Hammer.

Target audience: The target audience for my magazine will be for males and females, over the age of 12 and people who like magazines like Kerrang! and Metal Hemmer and people who like the genres of music.

Major conventions I will use: On my front cover I will have some sell lines at the top of the page, under that will be the Mast Head, under that will be the main image which will be of Rou Reynolds and will take up around 3 quarters of the page. In the middle of the main image I will have the main sell line which will be Enter Shikari and above that will be the sub heading which will be A Flash Flood of Shikari. On the left hand side I will have a sell line, which will be the RIP poster special. Right at the bottom of the page I will have a small sell line, which will be upcoming tours, and in the bottom right corner I will have the barcode and essential info.
On the contents page I will have the title The Contents at the top of the page, I will have the page numbers and what is going to be on those pages in the centre of the page and will have images around the contents.
On the Double page spread I will have a small title Toxic Sound News in the top left corner of the page, on the first page of the double page spread I will have the Article title A Flash Flood of Shikari and under that I will have a strap-line which will be Taking the World like an alien invasion. I will then have the article under that which will be on the right hand side of the page and will have several images around it. I will also have a dominant image at the left side of the article. On the second page I will have some upcoming tours of different bands, which I will make myself.

Conventions I may subvert/ change/ not use: The only conventions I’ve decided not to use is a caption and a pull quote as I don’t think they are as necessary as the rest of the main conventions.

Original images: For my front cover I’m hoping to get a picture of Rou Reynolds from Enter Shikari when I go to see them live. For the images inside the magazine on the contents page and the double page spread I will take pictures of my friends and make my own band. Also I will use some pictures I’ve taken before at other concerts.

Potential difficulties/ Plan B: The only thing with could really go wrong is if I cant get a good picture for the front cover, as a plan B I will just use pictures of my fiends like I’m doing inside the magazine.

Simpsons Movie Poster

For my photoshop task i had to make a poster for the simpsons movie.
to do this i first had to find the background image and put it on photoshop. i then got the image of Homer, cropped the background out using the magic wand tool and placed it in the position i wanted. i then got the picture of Bart and did the same as i did with Homer. Then i got the movie logo, croped it and placed it in its position, then i got the picture of maggie, cropped it and placed it in its position and then got the picture of Lisa, cropped it and placed it in the position. The picture turned out to be too small so i had to print screen it when it was zoomed in and pasted it in photoshop and cropped it so i could print it off without it pixelating.

Jarvis Cocker Magazine Cover

This is the original picture before i started to edit it.

This is what it looks like when its finished.
To do this i first i had to create a duplicate layer, then had to adjust the brightness and contrast by
going into image, then adjustments and then brightness/contrast.
Next i had to select and delete the background by using the Magic want tool.
I then made a duplicate layer so the masthead would go behind the image.
After this i had to use the paint bucket tool to make the background red.
Next i added text by using the text entry tool and then positioned the text in the places i wanted them.
I then added the barcode to the image and finally i saved the image as JPEG.

Pretty much all of the images through the whole magazine were copyrighted, the original images were edited very badly, the double page spread was badly constructed and there are many spelling and grammatical mistakes throughout the articles.

Reckless

The contents page looks very professional, the pictures are original and are fairly good quality.
The double page spread looks fairly professional and the pictures are well edited.
The front page is very unprofessional, the main image is blurry and I can’t see any main sell-line.
The background on the double page spread kind of makes the writing hard to read.

Sesh

The Front Page is constructed pretty well and the main image is good.
I like the logo as it shows that it’s a music magazine.

The title text on the double page spread looks quite simple and not in key with the rest of the magazines fonts.

Spinerette

The front cover is quite good, the, the main image is good and well edited.
The double page spread is quite good and well set out.
The white background on the front page makes it look very plain, on the contents page some of the pictures are copyrighted. On the double page spread the white background makes it look very plain and the image is very badly edited.

Amplified

The Front Cover looks very professional, the main image fits in well with the colours and the font of the text and you can clearly tell that it’s a music magazine.
The contents page looks quite professional and is well set out.
The double page spread looks very professional; the image is very professional and fits in with the rest of the page.
The only bad things I can pick out of the magazine is the copyrighted images on the contents page and the double page spread background is a different colour than the contents page and the front page.

What I have learned from looking at student work:

I have learned that to make a good music magazine, it has to be well set out, it has to actually look like a music magazine, the pictures have to look good on the page and have to be well edited otherwise it doesn’t look very professional.

How I will use this new knowledge to help me create my own product:

I know now that for my magazine to look good I’m going to have to make it look like a magazine, I’m going to have to plan it out well before I make the magazine and my pictures are going to have to look professional and fit in with the magazine.

Finnished Proliminary Task

My finished Preliminary Task Magazine front cover

My Finished Preliminary Task Magazine Contents Page

I believe i have done quite well with this, i agree with most of the feedback i have recieved and i know it isnt perfect as some of the pictures are out of focus and some of the text is hard to read when it goes over some of the pictures but i can use this as a baseline for my main magazine and can compare it to this when its finnished.
